Level 1 is a dungeon in Zelda 1. It is associated with an eagle in the game's official manual and in The Legend of Zelda Encyclopedia due to the dungeon being shaped like an eagle in the first quest of the game.
|Level 1 (Eagle)|
6 Small Keys
|Needed||A weapon ( )|
4 Small Keys (With Bombs)
Level 1 can be entered and completed at the beginning of the game and it is located north of the starting area and across a bridge through Lake Hylia that leads to a small island. On this island is a dead tree with a face whose mouth is the entrance to Level 1.
The dungeon contains several enemies, locked doors, and movable blocks. Like every dungeon in the game, a Dungeon Map and a Compass can be found to aid in navigation. The Bow is the main item of the dungeon, but the Boomerang can also be obtained by defeating a group of red Goriyas. The Arrow must be purchased from a shop for 80 Rupees in order to use the Bow. The Bow is needed later in the game to defeat Gohma and Ganon.
At the west side of the dungeon in a room hidden by a movable block, an Old Man tells Link that the "Eastmost peninsula is the secret," referring to the end of the level at the eastern edge of the map. It is here that the boss of the dungeon, a green dragon known as an Aquamentus, can be found. After its defeat, a Heart Container appears, a Triforce Shard is rewarded in the next room, and Link is transported back outside of the dungeon.
The only item required to complete the level is a weapon to defeat the Aquamentus and the enemies inside. The Aquamentus can be defeated with any sword, Bombs, Arrows, or the Magical Rod. A Magical Shield is useful for blocking the projectiles from the Aquamentus. The dungeon contains 6 locked doors and 6 Small Keys, but only 4 Keys are required to finish the dungeon and collect the Bow if Bombs are used to create shortcuts through the two walls that can be bombed in the Dungeon. Without Bombs, all 6 Keys are needed.
Old Man Hints
When the dungeon is first entered, the player can leave the dungeon and come back in to find that the locked door that was on the north wall is now permanently opened.
|Level 1 (Second Quest)|
A weapon ( )
In the Second Quest, the dungeon is in the same location but the interior is completely different. The map is in the shape of the letter 'E', as the first five dungeons in the Second Quest spell out an anagram for 'ZELDA'.
